Chemical functionality
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001947
The capacity of the reactive groups carried by a polymer or polymer network to take part in chemical reactions, set by the kind of group present. A sol-gel network made from a vinyl-substituted trialkoxysilane, for example, offers the reactivity of its vinyl groups. It is a different quantity from the functionality of a monomer, the number of bonds a monomer can form, which decides whether a step-growth reaction gives linear chains or a network.
