Coherent structure

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002183

An ordered adsorbed layer whose two-dimensional lattice matches that of the underlying adsorbent surface, so that the adsorbate atoms sit in registry with the substrate lattice. If the layer does not fit the substrate lattice, it is called incoherent. Coherent overlayers are identified by low-energy electron diffraction, where the overlayer spots are related by simple ratios to those of the substrate.
