Contracture

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002513

A lasting shortening and stiffening of a muscle, tendon, or other soft tissue that restricts movement of the affected joint, resulting from fibrosis, prolonged immobilization, spasticity, burns, or muscle disease. The tissue itself has become stiff and short, which distinguishes it from a temporary contraction. Mild forms respond to stretching or splinting, whereas established fibrotic contractures often need surgery.
