Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002746

A narrow, pit-like invagination or recess within an epithelial surface, such as those found in the intestines (crypts of Lieberkühn) or tonsils. These structures increase the surface area of the tissue and often contain secretory glands or stem cells responsible for epithelial renewal. In the small intestine, for example, the crypts are the site of cell division that replenishes the cells of the villi.
