Pharyngeal pouch

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008728

An outpocketing of the endodermal lining of the pharynx in a developing vertebrate embryo, positioned internally opposite the external pharyngeal grooves. These paired structures arise between the pharyngeal arches and differentiate into several glands and other structures in the head and neck. For example, the thymus, parathyroid glands, and parts of the middle ear and tonsils develop from the epithelial lining of these pouches.
