Curtin-Hammett principle

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002799

A principle for a substrate that exists as two rapidly interconverting conformers or isomers, each reacting to give a different product. When interconversion is fast compared with the reactions and the products do not interconvert, the product ratio is controlled solely by the difference in free energy of the two transition states, not by the ground-state populations of the conformers. The more abundant conformer therefore need not give the major product.
