Derivative spectroscopy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003044
A technique in which the first or higher-order derivative of a spectral response is calculated with respect to wavelength. This mathematical manipulation enhances the resolution of overlapping absorption bands and can suppress constant or linearly sloping background signals. The resulting plot shows the rate of change of absorbance, dⁿA/dλⁿ, against wavelength, providing sharper features than the original zero-order spectrum.
