Desorption by displacement

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003067

The removal of an adsorbed substance from a surface by the competitive adsorption of a second substance from the surrounding fluid phase. The displacing substance has a higher affinity for the surface's active sites, causing the originally adsorbed species to detach and enter the bulk phase. This mechanism is the basis for displacement chromatography, where a strongly adsorbing compound is used to elute and separate components of a mixture from a stationary phase.
