Electron jump
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003728
A reaction step in which an electron transfers from one species to another, forming an ionic intermediate such as a radical ion pair. Chemists use the phrase for this mechanistic electron transfer, as distinct from a spectroscopic transition, in which an electron changes energy level within one atom or molecule by absorbing or emitting a photon. The spectroscopic event is usually called an electronic transition.
