Electron kinetic energy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003729
The energy an electron possesses due to its motion, calculated as one-half its mass times its velocity squared. In photoelectron spectroscopy, it is the measured kinetic energy of an electron ejected from a sample after absorbing a photon. The binding energy of the electron within the material is determined by subtracting this measured kinetic energy and the spectrometer's work function from the known energy of the incident photon.
