Electron-transfer ring-opening metathesis polymerization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003765

A ring-opening metathesis polymerization that runs through one-electron redox steps, without a metal-carbene initiator. An excited photoredox catalyst or an electrode oxidizes a vinyl ether, generating a radical cation that serves as the chain carrier for ring-opening of a strained cyclic olefin. Its active chain end is a radical cation, unlike the metal carbene found in Grubbs-type systems.
