Epiphyseal plate
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004031
A cartilaginous growth plate located near the ends of long bones in children and adolescents, responsible for longitudinal bone growth. It consists of several zones of cartilage cells that proliferate, hypertrophy, and eventually ossify. Once growth is complete, the epiphyseal plate fuses and is replaced by bone, forming the epiphyseal line.
