Freezing out

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004666

Removal of a condensable vapor from a gas stream by passing it through a trap held at low temperature, so that the component condenses or solidifies inside. In flue gas analysis, traps cooled to successively lower temperatures separate the organic fraction of the sample. The words are also used for crystallizing one component out of a liquid mixture by cooling it, as when water is frozen out of a dilute solution.
