G-SIMS

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005050

A static secondary ion mass spectrometry method in which one area is measured twice, with different primary beam energies or with different primary ions, and the peak intensities of one spectrum are divided by those of the other. The ratios then serve to rescale a spectrum, giving a new spectrum. Originally the letter G stood for gentle, since the output reveals the masses of intact surface molecules more readily than static SIMS does, and, as in static SIMS, the dose of primary ions stays under roughly 1E16 ions per square metre.
