Gubernaculum

A cord of mesenchymal tissue that connects the fetal gonad to the developing inguinal region of the abdominal wall. It guides the descent of the testes into the scrotum in males and the ovaries to a position in the pelvis in females. In males, its remnant forms the scrotal ligament, while in females it forms the ovarian ligament and the round ligament of the uterus.
