Hemochromes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005194

Low-spin compounds of heme in which the fifth and sixth coordination positions on the central iron atom are occupied by nitrogen atoms from two non-porphyrin ligands. These ligands are typically strong-field ligands, such as those from histidine residues in proteins or from added bases like pyridine. The resulting complex exhibits a characteristic absorption spectrum, with a sharp Soret band and distinct alpha and beta bands in the visible region.
