Hemolytic disease of the newborn

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005201

A condition in which a mother's antibodies cross the placenta and attack the red blood cells of her fetus or newborn infant, leading to their destruction. This immune response occurs when there is an incompatibility between the mother's and the baby's blood types, most commonly involving the Rh factor. The destruction of red blood cells can cause anemia, jaundice, and in severe cases, hydrops fetalis.
