High-mobility group box protein
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005296
A family of non-histone, DNA-binding proteins that can bind to the minor groove of the DNA helix, inducing bending and influencing DNA replication, repair, and transcription. When released from necrotic cells or actively secreted by immune cells, these proteins act as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), functioning as pro-inflammatory cytokines that signal tissue injury. The most studied member is HMGB1, which is a key mediator in the inflammatory response during infection and sterile injury.
