Imbibition

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005600

Absorption of a liquid into a gel or porous solid, driven by capillary forces and the affinity of the liquid for the solid, with or without swelling. Dry seeds soaking up water swell, whereas water drawn into porous rock or ceramic leaves the solid unchanged in size. It differs from dissolution, in which the solid itself passes into solution.
