Imbalance
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005599
Uneven progress, at the transition state, among the several bond-making, bond-breaking and charge-delocalization changes that make up a single reaction. In the nitroalkane anomaly, deprotonation of the carbon acid runs ahead of delocalization of the developing negative charge into the nitro group, and the mismatch shows up as different Brønsted exponents for the acid and the base sides. Imbalance is common in eliminations, additions and other reactions involving proton transfer.
