Immobile adsorption

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005628

A situation in which adsorbed molecules have little freedom to move across the surface because the thermal energy kT is small compared with the energy barrier, delta E, between adjacent sites, so the adsorbate rarely hops to a neighboring site. Such adsorption is necessarily localized at definite sites, and it is not restricted to chemisorption. It contrasts with mobile adsorption, in which the molecules move freely over the surface.
