Ionophore

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006140

A lipid-soluble molecule that facilitates the transport of ions across a lipid membrane. Ionophores bind to specific ions, shielding their charge and allowing them to pass through the hydrophobic interior of the membrane. They are classified as either mobile carriers, which diffuse across the membrane, or channel formers, which create a pore for ions to pass through.
