Kinetic equivalence

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006355

The relation between two proposed reaction mechanisms that imply the same rate law, so that kinetic measurements alone cannot tell them apart. A classic case is a general-acid-catalysed route and a specific-acid, general-base route that give identical rate equations. Other evidence, such as isotope effects, solvent effects or trapped intermediates, is then needed to choose between them.
