Knock-down
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006370
A technique used in molecular biology to reduce the expression of a specific gene or the amount of its corresponding protein. This is achieved by introducing small interfering RNA (siRNA) or short hairpin RNA (shRNA) molecules into cells, which target and degrade messenger RNA (mRNA). The effect is transient, lasting for days to weeks, and is distinct from a permanent genetic alteration.
