Megakaryocyte

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007144

A large bone marrow cell responsible for producing platelets, which are necessary for normal blood clotting. These cells undergo a process called endomitosis, in which they replicate their DNA without dividing, resulting in a very large cell with a multi-lobed nucleus. Upon maturation, megakaryocytes extend cytoplasmic projections into blood sinusoids, and these projections fragment into thousands of platelets that are released into the circulation.
