Modified active solid
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007450
An active solid whose surface has been intentionally altered through chemical reaction or by the deposition of a new substance to change its chromatographic properties. This modification tailors the solid's selectivity and capacity for specific separation tasks. For example, silica gel can be chemically bonded with C18 alkyl chains to create a nonpolar stationary phase for reversed-phase chromatography, a process that fundamentally changes its interaction with analytes compared to the unmodified polar silica.
