Molecular laser

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007503

A gas laser in which the lasing medium consists of molecules and the gain arises from transitions between their electronic, vibrational or rotational levels. The population inversion is produced by an electric discharge in the nitrogen and carbon dioxide lasers, by an exothermic chemical reaction in the hydrogen fluoride and deuterium fluoride lasers, and by optical pumping with another laser in the methyl fluoride far-infrared laser.
