Molecular shuttle
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007518
A rotaxane or pseudorotaxane whose macrocyclic ring can slide along the threaded axle between two or more recognition sites, called stations. In the first example, reported in 1991, the ring hopped between two identical stations by thermal motion alone, over a barrier of about 13 kcal/mol. In later designs, changes in pH, light or redox state alter the relative affinity of the stations and so set where the ring sits.
