Multiphoton process

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007652

A photochemical process in which a molecule absorbs two or more photons, either simultaneously or sequentially, to reach an excited electronic state. The energy of the absorbed photons combines to overcome the energy gap to the excited state, even if individual photons lack sufficient energy. This phenomenon is observed when high-intensity light sources, such as lasers, are used.
