Neurite outgrowth

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013330

The process by which developing neurons project new extensions, known as neurites, which later differentiate into axons and dendrites. This growth is a fundamental step in the formation of neural circuits during development and in nerve regeneration after injury. Assays measuring neurite outgrowth in cell cultures are used in neurotoxicology to screen for chemicals that may interfere with nervous system development or repair by inhibiting or abnormally stimulating this process.
