Newton diagram

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007933

A graphical representation used in reaction dynamics to analyze the kinematics of a bimolecular collision. It is a vector diagram constructed in the center-of-mass frame, showing the initial relative velocity vector and the final velocity vectors of the scattered products. The diagram illustrates the relationship between the laboratory-frame scattering angles and velocities and their center-of-mass frame counterparts, with product velocities originating from the tip of the center-of-mass velocity vector.
