π-π stacking
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009339
A non-covalent attraction between aromatic rings that lie face to face, parallel or offset, with their pi systems overlapping. It is governed by dispersion and electrostatic terms and contributes to the self-assembly of conjugated molecules and polymers into columns and lamellae. Interaction energies are small, about 2 to 3 kcal/mol for a benzene dimer, and grow with the size of the aromatic surface.
