Cation-π interaction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001749
A noncovalent molecular interaction between a cation and the face of an electron-rich pi system, such as an aromatic ring or a double or triple bond. The attraction arises from electrostatic forces between the positive charge of the ion and the negative quadrupole moment of the pi system. The binding energy of this interaction in the gas phase can be comparable to that of hydrogen bonds.
