T-stacking
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012336
A non-covalent interaction between two aromatic rings arranged at right angles, with an edge hydrogen of one ring pointing at the face of the other. The slightly positive edge hydrogens are attracted to the electron-rich pi cloud of the face, giving a T-shaped, or edge-to-face, geometry. It is common among aromatic side chains in proteins, such as phenylalanine and tyrosine, and differs from the parallel face-to-face stacking found between DNA bases.
