Photoelectrosynthesis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008864
A light-driven process at an illuminated semiconductor in contact with a liquid, in which photon absorption makes carriers that transfer electrons across the junction and the net result is chemical energy stored in the products. Splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen at a semiconductor electrode is the standard example. Photoelectrocatalysis differs in that it adds an explicit external circuit and often an applied bias.
