Prostaglandins
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013440
A group of lipid compounds derived enzymatically from fatty acids, specifically arachidonic acid, that act as local hormones in animal tissues. They are characterized by a 20-carbon skeleton containing a five-membered ring. These compounds play roles in inflammation, blood clotting, and the contraction of smooth muscle.
