Pulsed extraction field

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013454

An electric field applied intermittently between a sample and the extraction optics of a mass spectrometer, particularly in secondary-ion mass spectrometry. The field is activated after a packet of secondary ions has been created, allowing the ions to drift before acceleration. This time-lag focusing technique compensates for the initial kinetic energy spread of the ions, resulting in higher achievable mass resolution compared to continuous extraction.
