Range straggling
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009926
The statistical variation in the penetration depth of energetic ions or particles into a material, even when they start with the same initial energy and direction. This phenomenon arises from the stochastic nature of energy loss processes as the ions interact with the target atoms. It results in a distribution of stopping points rather than a single, precise range for all incident particles.
