Schenck-sensitization mechanism

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010573

A mechanism for the photooxygenation of alkenes, where a sensitizer molecule absorbs light and transfers its excitation energy to ground-state triplet oxygen, generating highly reactive singlet oxygen. This singlet oxygen then reacts with the alkene via an ene reaction to form an allylic hydroperoxide. The sensitizer is regenerated and can participate in further cycles.
