Schiller layers

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010575

Iridescent, ordered layers that form in certain colloidal suspensions containing anisometric particles, such as flat plates or rods. The regular, parallel arrangement of these particles at high concentrations creates a structure that acts as a diffraction grating for visible light. The observed colors, which change with the angle of illumination and viewing, result from the constructive interference of light scattered by these periodic structures.
