Signaling lectin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013554
A carbohydrate-binding protein that, upon binding to a specific sugar structure on a cell surface or another molecule, initiates an intracellular signaling cascade. This process triggers a specific cellular response, such as cell adhesion, differentiation, or apoptosis. Galectins are a well-studied family of signaling lectins that modulate immune responses by binding to beta-galactoside sugars on glycoproteins and glycolipids.
