C-type lectin

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013004

A type of carbohydrate-binding protein, or lectin, whose binding activity is dependent on the presence of calcium ions. These proteins contain one or more conserved carbohydrate-recognition domains and play roles in the immune system, such as in pathogen recognition and cell adhesion. The 'C' in the name designates this calcium dependency, distinguishing them from other lectin families.
