Spectral skewing
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011151
A distortion of the relative peak intensities in a mass spectrum that arises when the concentrations of the analytes entering the ion source change while the spectrum is being scanned, as when a chromatographic peak elutes into a scanning mass spectrometer. Ions measured at the start of the scan then come from a different composition than those measured at the end. Scanning faster, or using a time-of-flight analyzer that records all masses at once, reduces it.
