Stereomutation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011380
The conversion of one stereoisomer into another through an altered configuration at a stereogenic unit, whether induced by heat, light, a catalyst or a reagent, with the constitution unchanged. Examples are epimerization or racemization of a stereocentre, cis-trans isomerization of an alkene, and pyramidal inversion at an amine nitrogen. Simple rotation about a single bond changes only the conformation, so it is not stereomutation.
