Thin target

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012002

A sample used in surface chemical analysis or nuclear physics experiments that is sufficiently thin such that the incident particles or radiation lose only a small fraction of their energy while passing through it. This condition minimizes scattering and energy loss events within the target material itself. The thickness is often measured in areal density units, such as micrograms per square centimeter.
