Tonic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012104
Relating to a state of continuous, sustained muscular contraction or tension. This type of muscular activity is characterized by its persistence, in contrast to clonic activity, which involves rhythmic, alternating contraction and relaxation. In toxicology, the term describes the sustained muscle spasms that can be a sign of poisoning by certain neurotoxins, such as strychnine, which interfere with neuromuscular signaling.
