Variance
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012517
A measure of dispersion equal to the square of the standard deviation. For a sample it is the sum of squared deviations from the mean divided by n minus 1, and for a whole population it is the mean squared deviation. The variances of independent error components add, so the variance of a result equals the sum of the variances of its contributions.
