Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012586

The development of male secondary sexual characteristics in a female, or the precocious development of such traits in a prepubertal male. This condition results from an excess of androgens, which are male sex hormones, or from the over-response of target tissues to these hormones. Virilization can be a symptom of endocrine disorders, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or an adverse effect of certain medications like anabolic steroids.
