X-ray standing waves
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012771
A periodic modulation of the X-ray electric field intensity that forms above a crystal surface when incident and diffracted X-ray beams interfere. This phenomenon creates nodes and antinodes of the electric field at specific positions relative to the crystal planes. It is used to precisely locate atoms or molecules on surfaces or within crystal lattices with sub-angstrom resolution.
