Conduction

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000551

  1. The transfer of thermal energy through direct contact between molecules, without the bulk movement of the material itself. In the atmosphere, this process is most significant near the Earth's surface, where air molecules directly interact with the warmer ground. Conduction is a primary mechanism for heating the lowest layer of the atmosphere.

  2. Flow of heat in response to a temperature gradient within an object or between objects that are in physical contact.
